A cure for the blues...
June 24th 2009 04:25
As generally cheerful and bright as my sparkling personality is....sometimes I get into a slight funk. I think it happens to the best of us, but being the emotional person that I am, I have to be careful not to allow my funk to spin into a swirling vortex of self doubt and despair. My problem is that I dwell on things. If something is bothering me, I stew in it, let it fester, swim about in it, consider and reconsider it, and then revisit it once I've managed to free myself from it.
The past month has been a rollercoaster of one yucky scenario after the other, and it has become ever more important for me to find ways of releasing and relaxing. First of all, I have to look at the positive. There have been some bright beacons of happiness and joy amongst all of the other shit that has been going on, so I can't claim utter crapfacedness. And I've become an expert at grabbing myself by the skin of my own neck and pulling myself out of the quicksand. This is why many of my recent posts on this blog have been about things that make me smile. Because I figure I'm not the only one who needs a good laugh every once in a while.
Laughter is the best medicine. It truly is. I laugh all of the time, even when I'm feeling down. My favorite brand of humor is usually dripping with sarcasm (I know you're shocked!). Here is something that really made me laugh recently.
Rush Limbaugh Karaoke!
This is just too funny! This clip features cartoon characters re-imagined as movies directed by some of the biggest names in film. Inspired by recent films like Transformers and G.I. Joe, here are some that look way better!
Even more fun than a bag full of video clips is my next cure for the blues....Dancing! Now, dancing with friends with drinks in hand is preferable, but if you're by yourself and need to shake off a case of the yuckies, dancing alone can be very freeing! No one around to judge you, clothing is very much optional, and you can perfect all of your sweetest moves before they make their public debut!
Just tonight, I was getting ready to go have some low key drinks with a friend that I haven't seen in a while, but I was feeling blah about it. I knew this wouldn't do, so I grabbed the most upbeat CD I could find, slammed it into the CD player, cranked it to max volume and carried it with me into the bathroom... I then proceeded to bust some moves in the shower. Now, this can be dangerous if you're not a skilled dancer like myself, but a little finger snapping and booty shaking is acceptable. In fact, my mood improved to such an extent that I decided not to end the dance-party-for-one with the shower. I continued all through the process of getting dressed, putting on my make up, and walking out the door, and driving in my car.
Of course the next best thing is singing in the car. I like to sing loudly and passionately while I drive, and I don't give a rat's patoot who's watching. For best results, I advise rolling down the window and really belting it out. Tonight it was power ballads, which is incidentally my favorite type of music to listen to when I'm working out! And if you're really lucky like I was this evening, you'll pull up at a red light next to a group of like minded people, and they'll join you in a stirring rendition of "Love Song" by Tesla. Ah yes...this really happened. You just can't go through life worrying about what other people think. Sometimes, you just have to sing and dance, and if you're super lucky...someone might join you!
My conversation with my friend was another very uplifting experience. She is a hoooooot! We are the girls that make everyone else cringe because of our loud laughter and animated conversation. But it was a BAR! Quit your bitchin' or get out of the kitchen!
So, my message here is that no matter what is bothering you, no matter how down in the dumps you are feeling, it is possible to pull yourself out of it. Even if the effects are only temporary, there is no reason to allow a bad mood to consume you. And, if you still can't give yourself a boost, let me know.. I'll help!
