Attn: Women - An Immediate Call to Action!!
September 16th 2008 00:03
If you are a woman who has been feeling the heartache that I have been feeling ever since Sen. John McCain announced his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, please know, you are far from alone.
As Palin evokes imagery of woman's suffrage and shattering glass ceilings, she seeks to turn back the clock on everything that our foremothers fought for. We as women cannot stand for it, and refuse to allow the rest of the Country and the rest of the World believe that Sarah Palin represents us and our views.
Now, we have a forum to make our voices heard, and we must. WOMEN AGAINST SARAH PALIN
is a website that is bringing women of all ages, races, and backgrounds together in the fight to educate our fellow American women about the dangers of a McCain/Palin Administration. On Sept. 3, they sent out an email to a group of friends and family, asking them to speak out on the candidacy of Sarah Palin. The email recipients in turn forwarded the email on to their associates, and to date the administrators of the site have received over 140,000 responses. They've compiled a listing of those responses and posted them on the website, giving a voice to the concerns of these women.
I believe that this is a time that is testing women and our integrity. Will we sit by while some of our fellow American women consider voting for a ticket simply because there is a woman present? Or, will we seize this opportunity to show that we are smarter than that. That we cannot be so easily duped by this obvious attempt to appeal to our desire to be represented, by people who do NOT have our best interests in mind! We must encourage everyone to vote for the party that still believes in equal pay for equal work, for reproductive rights and choice! I say that not only should we do this...we must!
WOMEN AGAINST SARAH PALIN has posted the email that started it all on their site, and is encouraging people to copy the text and continue to pass it along. Rather than simply emailing the message (Which I will be doing, also) I am going to post it here on my blog, and encourage all of you to pass it along, and be sure to visit WOMEN AGAINST SARAH PALIN and show them your support. I personally feel that it is utterly crucial for us to be as vocal and as insistent and passionate about these concerns as we can possibly be, because allowing McCain/Palin to win this election would be to the detriment of us all. The text of the message is below the following image for you to copy and paste into an email message.
Friends and compatriots,
We are writing to you because of the fury and dread we have felt since the announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. We believe that this terrible decision has surpassed mere partisanship, and that it is a dangerous farce—on the part of a pandering and rudderless Presidential candidate—that has a real possibility of becoming fact.
Perhaps like us, as American women, you share the fear of what Ms. Palin and her professed beliefs and proven record could lead to for ourselves and for our present and future daughters. To date, she is against a woman's right to choose, environmental protection, alternative energy development, freedom of speech (as mayor she repeatedly brought up the question of banning books), gun control, the separation of church and state, and polar bears.
We want to clarify that we are not against Sarah Palin as a woman, a mother, or, for that matter, a parent of a pregnant teenager, but solely as a rash, incompetent, and all together devastating choice for Vice President. Ms. Palin's political views are in every way a slap in the face to the accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers so fiercely fought for, and that we've so demonstrably benefited from.
First and foremost, Ms. Palin does not represent us. She does not demonstrate or uphold our interests as American women. It is presumed that the inclusion of a woman on the Republican ticket could win over women voters. We want to disagree, publicly.
Therefore, we invite you to reply here with a short, succinct message about why you, as a woman living in this country, do not support this candidate as second-in-command for our nation.
Please include your name (last initial is fine), age, and place of residence.
We will post your responses on a blog called "Women Against Sarah Palin," which we intend to publicize as widely as possible. Please send us your reply at your earliest convenience-the greater the volume of responses we receive, the stronger our message will be.
Thank you for your time and action.
VIVA!
Sincerely,

Selecting Sarah Palin, who was touted all summer by Rush Limbaugh, is no way to attract most women, including die-hard Clinton supporters. Palin shares nothing but a chromosome with Clinton. Her down-home, divisive and deceptive speech did nothing to cosmeticize a Republican convention that has more than twice as many male delegates as female, a presidential candidate who is owned and operated by the right wing and a platform that opposes pretty much everything Clinton's candidacy stood for -- and that Barack Obama's still does. To vote in protest for McCain/Palin would be like saying, "Somebody stole my shoes, so I'll amputate my legs."-Gloria Steinem
