Hey Ladies! John McCain Thinks You're an Idiot!
September 3rd 2008 05:54
When I first heard that there were actually women considering voting for John McCain, simply because they didn't like Obama, or because they feel that Hillary was robbed, or whatever their reasons were, I was very disappointed. And I couldn't wrap my head around it. Why, even if you are upset that Hillary didn't get the nomination, would you vote against everything she stands for? How do you justify that? How do you do any justice to the candidate that you supported by turning against her core beliefs? I was confused and saddened by the stubborness.
During the Dem Convention, I had the opportunity to see Senator Clinton speak. I also had the privledge to hear some of her supporters express the depth of their emotion about her campaign, and we mostly came away agreeing that Hillary is a woman whose political days are not over, not by a long shot, and that she blazed a trail for all women. For the first time I felt inspired by Senator Clinton, and what she has accomplished not only with this historic campaign, but throughout her carreer. And I started to see Hillary supporters in a state of flux. While most of them had already decided to vote for Obama, some up until that point still fell into the category mentioned above, Hillary women for McCain. After hearing Hillary and Obama speak at the convention, many of those who I spoke to shifted firmly to the Obama category, and we all began to resolve our differences, with a clear eye on the future, uniting over the common idea that McCain would continue the Bush nightmare, and that we had an amazing opportunity to bring that bad dream to an end.
Then, just as we were all about to commence singing Kum Ba Yah, it was Saturday, and Senator McCain announced his running mate, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. The chorus of "Who the heck is she?" could probably have been heard from space! After the initial shock wore off, my next reaction was, "Those bastards are trying to seduce the Hillary women!" What nerve! And how obvious!
I quickly regained my composure as I thought about the intellegent women of conviction that make up the Democratic Party. After all, they could never be bamboozled into casting their vote for a woman that stood against everything that women have been fighting for for decades! They would never be so naive that they could be conned into supporting somone who stands firmly against reproductive rights, who doesn't speak out in favor of equal pay for equal work, who believes that polar bears are not an endangered species while smugly wearing a polar bear pin on her lapel, who believes in drilling in ANWAR, in her own backyard!, who wants to continue the never ending war in Iraq, and whose exteme views seem slightly to the right of even George W. Bush. No way. We ladies are smarter than that!
In the days following the announcement, a flurry of questions began to surround Gov. Palin. I'll not list them all here, but suffice to say that McCain's vetting process has come seriously into question. If Palin was really vetted at all. He is already referring to Palin as his "soulmate" which is rather laughable considering he had known her for approximately an hour prior to selecting her. No, this was clearly a politically calculated move designed to woo disenfranchised Hillary supporters.
Yes, I admit, Palin has had an effect on the Conservative base of the Republican Party. The hardcore evangelicals love her. And that will help McCain without question. But surely the Hillary supporters won't be duped....will they??
While I watched day 2 of the Republican Convention, I cringed as Hillary Clinton's name was repeatedly envoked in the context of her "glass ceiling shattering" and her "brave trail blazing" campaign. Am I the only one who gets queasy when Republicans praise the Clintons? Over and over again we heard everyone from Fred Thompson to Newt Gingrich to W. himself all applauding the incredible fact that the first female Vice President was to be a Republican. I sincerely worried that Laura Bush was going to whip off her bra and burn it on the spot! Am I the only one who can see through the bullshit?
The Clintons were always the sworn enemies of the Right, and now the Republicans are all but embracing Hillary. Why? Could it be because they are counting on women out there being foolish enough to cast aside their convictions in favor of a grudge vote?
I did some research this evening, and while I found that most Hillary supporters are quite insulted by the idea that their votes can be bought with slick political maneuvering, there are web sites out there that are popping up in support of McCain-Palin, hosted by former Hillary supporters. Who are these women? What exactly was it about Hillary Clinton that they loved so much in the first place? It certainly could not have been any of her political stances, because it would involve a great deal of effort to find one single thing that Palin has in common with Hillary, aside from the obvious anatomical similarities.
I pray that people who consider themselves progressives, or femenists, or Democrats, or Hillary supporters do some soul searching before making the misguided choice to vote for John McCain. After all, equality is so much more than voting for the only only woman on the ticket. Voting for a woman who will only set our progress backward is completely antithetical to the entire feminist movement, and would be a disgraceful waste of an amazing opportunity to make some real changes to our Country.
Please think it through. Please.
