In Honor of Dr. King

January 20th 2009 10:37
There is really nothing that I can say about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that hasn't already been said. The man was a living prophet, a world treasure, and a light that continues to shine.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King Jr.

MLK Jr.

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death,” MLK from his 1967 "Beyond Vietnam" speech.

"Cowardice asks the question, “Is it safe?” Expediency asks the question, “Is it politic?” And Vanity comes along and asks the question, “Is it popular?” But Conscience asks the question “Is it right?” And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right." MLK

"Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like any man, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." MLK

"We must combine the toughness of the serpent with the softness of the dove, a tough mind and a tender heart." MLK

Dr. King in his own words. Nothing could be more poignant. Especially today.
