McCain wants to reinstate the draft???
August 21st 2008 07:24
At a town hall meeting on August 20, a member of the audience made a comment to Senator McCain regarding his statement that he would "follow bin Laden to the gates of hell." She said, "If we don't reenact the draft, I don't think we'll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell."
McCain's reply? "Ma'am, let me say that I don't disagree with anything you said."
Now, many will say that McCain was agreeing with everything she said EXCEPT the part about the draft, but questions come to mind when considering other comments he has made in the past.
A year ago, for example, McCain told a New Hampshire audience, “I might consider [a draft], I don’t think it’s necessary, but I might consider it if you could design a draft where everybody equally would serve.”
And, as was pointed out on ThinkProgress.com:
In June, McCain said it would take an “all-out World War III” to make the draft necessary — which seems to mean he’d consider it. In July 2006, when asked to react to Newt Gingrich’s claim that “You’d have to say to yourself this is in fact World War III,” McCain said, “I do [agree] to some extent.”
If this was, in fact, a flub on his part..if he truly misspoke, then I am surpirsed that the McCain campaign isn't all over this, issuing denials and retractions and clarifications. The silence on the issue so far is a bit unsettling to me. I'm sure we will hear something from them in the coming days, and it will be interesting to see how this is handled.
