My New Favorite Person: Craig Ferguson
September 29th 2008 07:19
I have decided to start a new feature here on My Life My Muse. I'm calling it My New Favorite Person. This may be a Monthly feature, it may be weekly, heck...it might be daily. My goal is to celebrate people who make an impact on my life, and hopefully help to bring their message to a wider audience. Sometimes they will be celebrities, sometimes they may be politicians, and sometimes they might just be people I know personally. Their message may be serious, funny, uplifting, or sad, but they will always be important in some capacity to me. I hope you will enjoy these posts, and let me know if they impact you as well.
In this first installment of My New Favorite Person, I am featuring late night talk show host and comedian Craig Ferguson. As the host of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on CBS, I've always found him to be very entertaining and funny, bringing something fresh to the somewhat stale format we've become so familiar with in Late Night TV.
Lately, Mr. Ferguson has been peppering his opening monologues with political rants, which have often been fairly poignant, but none more so than the one he delivered on September 10, 2008. His impassioned plea to Americans to think for themselves, and to simply give a damn was incredibly moving and inspirational to me. As a man who came from Scotland and earned his American citizenship as an adult, he has become discouraged by the overwhelming amount of Americans who have become lazy when it comes to their own freedoms. In a particularly moving line he says to young people,
In another segment, filmed during the time when Brittney Spears was in her head shaving breakdown mode a year or so ago, Ferguson opened his show addressing the fact that people, himself included, often spend too much time making fun of the troubles that celebrities with addiction problems face, rather than wanting them to get better. He takes the opportunity to candidly discuss his own battle with alcoholism, including a time when he considered taking his own life. This is not the kind of thing we are use to when tuning in to the normally irreverent Late Night T.V., but it is refreshing to see, and the ratings of the Late Late Show are reflecting that Craig Ferguson has been striking a chord with the American audience, and he continues to grow his audience while mixing his silly sense of humor with his very serious moments.
I respect this man and encourage anyone who has not tuned in to the show to give it a try. He airs immediately after the David Lettermen show on CBS, and for those overseas, you can access the episodes online at CBS.com.
Below, I've included a selection of my favorite moments from his show.
