Yoga is for Weenies! My Adventures with Pilates.
May 11th 2009 10:13
Real tough gals like me do pilates. Now, when I tell people that pilates is my exercise of choice, many people laugh and compare it to Yoga. There's nothing wrong with yoga, mind you. It is a fantastic way for one to align their Chi and get in touch with their inner oneness and all that jazz, but for me, Pilates is the way to go if you really want to feel the burn.
I will never forget the first time I tried this incredible workout. I'm sure many of you night owls out there have seen the infomercial. It stars Daisy Fuentez (former MTV V-Jay) and it is on alllll the time. Do you know which one I am referring to? That's right. "Winsor Pilates." On this particular night, as I saw the infomercial for the billionth time, something just clicked, and I bought it. It was self improvement time, and the train was leaving the station with or without me. The package that I ordered came with the miraculous "power ring" which was apparently something you place between your legs and squeeze (get your minds out of the gutter!).
I even paid extra for rush shipping. In the days leading up to the arrival of my Power Ring and DVD, I was giddy. I thought about all of the new clothes I would buy and how I was totally going to start jogging after I dropped the first couple of pounds. I bought new work out clothes and waited anxiously for the package to be delivered.
Then, finally, there it was. Sitting outside the door of my apartment was a big box that clearly stated, "Winsor Pilates Accelerated Fat Burning Workout." Well, that was even more incentive to start right away, because now obviously all my neighbors knew that I was trying to drop some poundage. I figured they would all be looking out their peep holes on my laundry day, monitoring my progress.
I ripped open the package, and stared at the underwhelming little DVD and cheapo plastic ring. But I wasn't fazed. I got on my hip workout gear, moved the coffee table and popped in the disk. And there she was, Mari Winsor, my new personal trainer, assuring me that this was the answer to all of my prayers. Telling me that this was a low impact workout, and that if at any time I felt that I couldn't keep up, her assistant Laura would be in the background, doing a less strenuous version of the workout.
And it began. At first, I was really into it. It was no sweat! I could already feel the pounds just fading away. But wait...she wants me to get in what position? Place my hands where? Twist my legs how??? How many times?!?!?
Hey, I was a beginner. I figured maybe for this first workout, I would follow Laura. Then, as I got more flexible, I would do it Mari's way.
Well, Laura was no slouch. I kept up with her, but just barely. When the workout was over, I was in PAIN! This was not going to be easy. The next day, I was too sore to try again. So, I waited. To heal you know. Best not to burn yourself out right away.
You know what they say about good intentions. I really wanted to stay faithful to the program. But as time went on, I did it less and less. I just sort of forgot about it and went back to my old routine. Then, one day, as I was lounging around watching TV, my gaze traveled to the corner of my living room. And there, leaning against the wall, was my lonely Power Ring. I began to think...there has got to be a reason that I had never packed that sucker away. Why would I have left it out? It certainly wasn't because of my lack-luster cleaning skills. It must be a sign....perhaps I was just waiting for the right time. For the Ring to call to me. To signal that it was time to begin.
I answered the Ring's call. I decided to allow Mari Windsor to lead the way to my transformation into the hot and sexy babe I always knew I could be! And you know what, that is a damn good work out that gives real results! I highly recommend it. Once you get going and you stick with it, you'll find that you get a full work out from head to toe. Of course, you will ache in places you never knew contained muscles, but it is so worth it.
I was thinking about it this evening as myself and Mari sweated it out to some bad 80's power ballads (I know the workout well enough now that I can turn the volume down and crank my own music. And yes, I work out to power ballads. What?). It is all about persistence and motivation. Now if only I could diminish my love of cookies and burgers, I'd be set for life! Alas, I love cookies and I love burgers, so I'm certain that Mari Winsor and her amazing Power ring will be my faithful companions for years to come!
